Azuri Technologies and Unilever Kenya to produce solar power

Azuri Technologies and Unilever Kenya have announced a collaboration which will bring solar home solutions to millions more off-grid homes across Kenya.

The collaboration between the pay-as-you-go solar home systems provider Azuri and consumer goods provider Unilever Kenya was declared on the day top officials from both firms were set to participate in a business summit at Strathmore Business School. The summit is part of British Prime Minister Theresa May’s trip to the Kenya.

The terms of the deal, Azuri’s Quad solar home system will be co-branded with the Unilever Sunlight brand and offered through Unilever’s distribution network. Both companies estimate the network encompasses some 67,000 smallholder traders in the country.

According to Simon Bransfield-Garth, Azuri CEO, Azuri is glad to be partnering with Unilever to expand further the reach of solar pay-as-you-go technology.”

Azuri Technologies has been addressing the challenge of access to electricity in Africa, since 2012, where over 600 million people are affected.

Many such households are sited in regions where provision of grid electricity is very affluent; However, The tech firm’s pay-as-you go service is considered affordable, distributing reliable and renewable power.

Furthermore, the merger between Azuri and Unilever will be carried out through the latter’s SunLight brand of washing powder.

Managing Director East Africa at Unilever, Justin Apsey, added that “The partnership with Azuri will help deliver life-changing solar technology to off-grid communities and provide Unilever customers and traders with the benefits of modern energy.”
