Ghana: NCA reveals plans to protect internet connectivity from future disruptions

The National Communications Authority (NCA) has detailed measures to facilitate Ghana’s complete recovery from recent internet disruptions and prevent future occurrences.

On March 14, many Ghanaians experienced difficulties accessing internet connectivity nationwide.

The Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications attributed the outages to disruptions in multiple submarine optic fiber cables connecting to Ghana.

In a few days, internet connectivity, as reported by mobile network operators (MNOs), began to gradually recover. While not yet fully restored to pre-disruption levels, substantial progress has been achieved.

The Director-General of the NCA, Dr. Joe Anokye, stated that the organization has learned from these events and implemented measures to prevent a recurrence.

Speaking at a press briefing on March 24, he said that although over the years some cables might have developed faults, it has never been on a large scale.

Nevertheless, Dr Anokye said his outfit has been proactive by developing some key strategies to prevent this.

“MNOs will be directed to connect to a cable provider in the Sub-region that is currently not landing in Ghana,” he said.
