Diageo names John Musunga new Managing Director for Africa

– Nairobi to be continental headquarters

Global beverages giant Diageo has named seasoned executive John Musunga as its new Managing Director for Africa.

The appointment reinforces Diageo’s long-term commitment to Africa as one of its most strategic growth markets. Musunga will oversee the company’s operations across the continent, focusing on accelerating innovation, strengthening customer and consumer relationships, and creating sustained economic and social value.

Diageo announced the move on June 30, describing Musunga as a proven transformational leader with more than 25 years of international experience spanning Africa, Europe, and Asia. He has built a strong reputation for driving business transformation, accelerating growth, and leading high-performing teams in complex markets.

Prior to his new continental role, Musunga served as Managing Director for Diageo’s South, West, and Central Africa business, overseeing operations in more than 30 markets. Before that, he was Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Guinness Nigeria, where he led the business through a significant period of transformation and renewed growth.

Musunga first joined Diageo in 2021 as Managing Director of Kenya Breweries Limited (KBL). His leadership there helped rebuild momentum after the COVID-19 pandemic and laid the groundwork for his expanded regional responsibilities.

Nairobi Named Continental Headquarters

In his new position, Musunga will be based in Nairobi, relocating from London. Diageo said the decision highlights Kenya’s growing importance as a regional business and financial hub and strengthens Nairobi’s status as a preferred headquarters for multinational corporations on the continent.

Before joining Diageo, Musunga held several global and regional leadership roles at GSK (GlaxoSmithKline), working across Africa, Europe, and Asia. At GSK, he partnered with international health organisations and led large-scale commercial and public health initiatives.

Throughout his career, Musunga has been recognised for combining strong commercial results with inclusive leadership. Diageo noted his passion for talent development and building diverse, high-performing teams.
“His qualities position him well to lead our next chapter of growth across Africa,” the company said.

The appointment aligns with Diageo’s ambition to deepen its presence across the continent, drive innovation, and deliver lasting value to communities while reinforcing Africa’s strategic importance in its global portfolio.
