Eric Intong Monchu tapped new MD(CRRO) at Afreximbank

Cameroonian banker Eric Intong Monchu has been officially confirmed as Group Managing Director, Client Relations and Regional Operations(CRRO) at the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), the institution .

Based in Cairo, Monchu will oversee a key commercial portfolio that connects markets, clients and the execution of financing for the bank, which reported $48.5 billion in assets and contingent liabilities at the end of 2025.

His mandate centres on strengthening coordination between business development, client coverage and transaction execution, bringing headquarters strategy closer to the realities of governments, financial institutions and companies across Africa.

The appointment forms part of a broader reorganisation of Afreximbank’s regional management. Monchu is not assuming the role of Group Chief Executive. The bank has been led by fellow Cameroonian George Elombi since October 2025. Instead, Monchu takes full charge of one of the positions most directly linked to the institution’s commercial capacity.

The confirmation formalises responsibilities he had already been carrying on an interim basis for several years. Afreximbank had previously presented him as Acting Group Managing Director, Client Relations, reflecting a gradual rise within the organisation rather than a sudden elevation.

Monchu joined Afreximbank in 2014 and initially focused on trade finance for sovereigns, financial institutions and corporations. He later assumed operational responsibility for Anglophone West Africa, based in Abuja. His experience spans risk analysis, transaction origination, trade finance and deep knowledge of African markets.

Before joining Afreximbank, he worked at Citibank Cameroon as Vice President, Deputy Corporate Banking Head and Business Credit Officer. Earlier in his career, he held roles at Union Bank of Cameroon covering corporate banking, treasury, risk management, branch management and anti-money laundering.
