Mpho Masupe, a veteran financial leader with more than 20 years of experience in Botswana’s banking, mining, and financial services industries, has been steering Standard Chartered Botswana as its Chief Executive Officer since 2017.
Masupe’s tenure with Standard Chartered spans over 12 years, including his role as Chief Financial Officer since 2013, where he oversees the bank’s financial operations with a focus on robust governance and operational efficiency.
Under his dynamic leadership, Masupe has championed a bold strategic vision, driving sustainable growth and solidifying the bank’s status as a cornerstone of the region’s financial landscape.
Under Masupe’s leadership, Standard Chartered Botswana delivered robust financial results, achieving a 15% year-on-year top-line growth and surpassing the P1 billion mark in income. Profit before tax soared by 59% to P403 million, driven by strong performance in the Commercial, Corporate, and Institutional Banking (CCIB) segment and prudent cost management.
Additionally, the bank achieved a 2% increase in operating income, exceeding BWP 1 billion, and a 19% rise in profit before tax to BWP 478 million ($35.6 million) and profit after tax, BWP 347 million ($25.9 million) in 2024.

Masupe accelerated the bank’s digital transformation, with 79% of clients now digitally active and 96% of transactions conducted digitally. Demonstrating a strong commitment to sustainability, Masupe spearheaded the “Greening Botswana” initiative, which aims to plant 12,500 indigenous trees nationwide.
Celebrating Standard Chartered’s 125-year legacy in Botswana, Masupe reinforced the bank’s deep community roots through impactful CSR initiatives and public commitments to national development.

Prior to Standard Chartered, Masupe held roles at Debswana Diamond Company for over eight years. As Programme Manager for Corporate Strategy , he led company-wide initiatives to drive high performance.
Masupe served as Shared Services Manager, managing a multi-functional centre supporting finance, HR, and SAP operations across Debswana. Earlier, as Financial Manager, he directed financial and administrative functions for the Orapa and Letlhakane mines, showcasing his expertise in large-scale operations.
Masupe’s career began at Morupule Colliery Limited, where he served as Financial Controller, managing the colliery’s financial and administrative operations. His extensive experience across diverse industries has equipped him with a strategic and holistic approach to leadership.
