GSMA board elects Ralph Mupita deputy chair

The GSMA Board of Directors has elected the Group President and Chief Executive of MTN Group, Ralph Mupita, as Deputy Chair for the remainder of its term, extending until the end of 2026.

In this role, Mupita will support the Chair and Board in shaping the strategic direction of the GSMA, which represents global mobile operators and companies within the broader mobile ecosystem.

The Director General of the GSMA, Vivek Badrinath, extended his congratulations, stating:

“My warmest congratulations to Mr. Mupita on being elected as the Deputy Chair of the GSMA Board. His experience will be invaluable as we continue to navigate the dynamic landscape of our industry. I look forward to working closely with him and the Board.”

A Vision for Digital Growth in Africa and Beyond
Expressing his gratitude for the appointment, Mupita highlighted the transformative role of mobile technology in Africa and other emerging markets.

“This appointment is a great honour as it comes at a time of rapid technological developments and increasing digital adoption across Africa. Mobile technology will play a critical role in tackling pressing societal challenges and unlocking the full potential of Africa and the Global South. We must ensure no one is left behind in this journey toward a more connected future.”

He further reaffirmed his commitment to advancing GSMA’s strategic objectives, emphasizing the organisation’s role in driving industry-wide innovation and change.

Mupita’s Leadership in the Telecom Industry
Mupita currently serves as Group President and CEO of MTN Group, a position he has held since September 2020, after previously serving as the company’s Chief Financial Officer from 2017. Under his leadership, MTN has strengthened its financial position, refined its strategic focus, and successfully listed its subsidiaries in Ghana, Uganda, Rwanda, and Uganda.
