M-Pesa Foundation invests Ksh.50m to transform Chekombero special school

The M-Pesa Foundation has unveiled a Ksh. 50 million upgrade to Chekombero Special School in Sabatia Constituency, Vihiga County, enhancing learning conditions for students with disabilities.

The initiative, part of the Foundation’s Citizens of the Future Programme, includes renovated classrooms for Grades 1 to 9, a new Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) block, and a state-of-the-art 20-seater ICT laboratory to boost digital learning.

The project addresses long-standing challenges of overcrowded and dilapidated classrooms, providing a comfortable environment for students. Additionally, the Foundation revamped the school’s kitchen with two modern jikos, built a multipurpose hall, and refurbished dormitories to accommodate learners during the term. These upgrades aim to create a supportive space for students who require specialized care.

“For years, our learners faced daily challenges in cramped, outdated facilities. Now, they have spacious classrooms, strong roofs, and access to a new ICT lab—many are using computers for the first time. These facilities lay the foundation for new dreams,” said Wilson Otieno Charles, the school’s principal.

Nicholas Nganga, Chairman of M-Pesa Foundation, emphasized the initiative’s broader mission: “Every child deserves an empowering learning environment. This investment restores hope, opens digital opportunities, and prepares learners for a brighter future.”

The Chekombero project is part of M-Pesa Foundation’s nationwide effort to improve educational infrastructure across all 47 counties in Kenya, ensuring equitable access to quality education.
