Bernard Gyebi assumes role of MD/CEO of UBA Ghana

Bernard Gyebi has assumed the position of Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of United Bank for Africa (UBA) Ghana Ltd. With over two decades of executive experience, he brings unparalleled expertise in risk management, credit oversight, regulatory compliance, and strategic leadership to drive sustainable growth and operational excellence.

Early Foundations in Credit and Risk Excellence
As a distinguished leader in Ghana’s banking sector, Bernard Gyebi’s career began with a strong focus on credit risk, where he honed his skills in assessing and managing lending portfolios across corporate and retail segments. As Head of Credit at Stanbic Bank Ghana, he led comprehensive credit teams, establishing robust frameworks that strike a balance between opportunity and prudence. This foundational role equipped him with deep insights into Ghana’s dynamic financial landscape, emphasizing disciplined credit culture and proactive risk identification to support business expansion while safeguarding institutional stability.

Advancing to Enterprise-Wide Risk Leadership
Progressing to senior positions at the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB), Bernard served first as Executive Head of Credit Risk Management, overseeing the end-to-end credit process, setting risk appetite, and fostering a risk-aware environment across the enterprise. He later advanced to Chief Risk & Compliance Officer, assuming full responsibility for credit, operational, market risk, anti-money laundering, and regulatory compliance functions. During this tenure, he spearheaded the implementation of a comprehensive enterprise-wide risk management framework, enhancing governance and aligning the bank with evolving regulatory standards.

Strategic Risk Governance in Multinational Settings
At Republic Bank Ghana, Bernard held the position of General Manager – Risk Management, directing the complete spectrum of risk functions for the institution. He gained international exposure through a secondment to the parent company’s headquarters in Trinidad and Tobago, where he managed risk assignments across multiple Caribbean subsidiaries. This global perspective strengthened his ability to navigate complex regulatory environments, implement cross-border risk strategies, and contribute to group-wide resilience in diverse markets.

As Managing Director of Prudential Bank Ghana, Bernard demonstrated visionary leadership in steering an indigenous institution toward greater efficiency and market relevance. He focused on strengthening governance, optimizing operations, and positioning the bank for sustainable performance in a competitive landscape, all while upholding high standards of compliance and stakeholder value.
