Fani Titi, a seasoned leader renowned for his resilience, strategic vision, and commitment to long-term growth, has been named InstinctBusiness CEO of the Week. Since taking the helm as Group Chief Executive in March 2020, he has played a pivotal role in driving Investec’s expansion, bolstering its core banking and wealth management operations, and delivering sustainable value for clients and stakeholders.
Fani’s journey is a testament to perseverance and excellence. Born and raised in South Africa as one of 14 siblings, his academic brilliance earned him scholarships that paved the way for higher education, including a scholarship to the University of California, Berkeley, where he majored in mathematics.
After completing his studies, Fani returned to South Africa and began his career as a teacher before venturing into business. His deep expertise in private equity and investment banking initially made him an Investec client—a relationship that ultimately evolved into a leadership role culminating in his appointment as Group CEO.
Prior to his current position, Fani served as Joint CEO of Investec Group from October 2018, working alongside Hendrik du Toit. During this period, he was instrumental in the successful demerger of Investec Asset Management, which led to the independent listing of Ninety One on 16 March 2020. Today, he steers Investec’s global banking and wealth businesses, positioning the company as a significant player in the international financial sector.
Under his astute leadership, Investec has not only solidified its presence in key markets but has also embraced innovation as a strategic cornerstone. With a strong commitment to sustainability and a forward-thinking vision, Fani has guided the organization toward achieving its ambitious goals while adeptly navigating the complexities of a rapidly evolving financial landscape.
Beyond his role at Investec, Fani boasts an impressive entrepreneurial background. He was a founding member of Kagiso Trust Investments Limited (now Kagiso Tiso Holdings) and played a key role in co-founding and listing Kagiso Media Limited on the JSE, where he served as CEO. He also established Tiso Group, a private investment firm, and led its merger with Kagiso Trust Investments to form Kagiso Tiso Holdings.
In 2023, Fani emerged as the highest-paid banking CEO in South Africa, earning over R170 million in the financial year—a reflection of his significant contributions to Investec’s success and the broader financial industry.
