Ghana: Daniel Sackey retires as MD of Ecobank Ghana; Joana Mensah appointed acting MD
Ecobank Ghana PLC has announced the retirement of Daniel Sackey from his role as Managing Director, as he has reached his retirement age. Additionally, he will step down from his position as a member of the Bank’s Board of Directors.
Consequently, he will formally resign from his role as a member of the Bank’s Board of Directors.
Daniel Sackey began his tenure with the Bank in 1995 and steadily advanced within the organization, holding positions such as Country Risk Manager, Regional Risk Manager, and Deputy Group Risk Manager.
He later took on significant roles within the Ecobank Group, including serving as the Managing Director for Ecobank Rwanda and Ecobank Zimbabwe.
Additionally, he held the position of Cluster Head for the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) zone, which encompassed Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
In September 2016, he returned to Ghana, bringing with him extensive banking experience gained across East and Southern Africa, to assume the leadership role at Ecobank Ghana.
During his seven-year tenure, Daniel Sackey is recognized for his pivotal role in elevating Ecobank Ghana to a prominent position in the digital ecosystem. He is highly regarded for successfully navigating the bank through the challenges of the pandemic era, ensuring minimal disruptions.
During his leadership, Ecobank consistently earned national and international acclaim, receiving numerous awards in recognition of its outstanding performance.
Daniel Sackey concludes his tenure on a high note, with the recent honor of Ecobank Ghana PLC being named the “CIMG Best Bank of the Year for 2022.” The bank extends its best wishes to him as he embarks on the next chapter of his career.
In Sackey’s absence, Joana Mensah has been appointed as the Acting Managing Director. She initially joined Ecobank Ghana in August 1993 as a Financial Analyst within the Corporate Banking Department.
Following her role as a Financial Analyst, she took on the responsibilities of a Relationship Manager, overseeing the SME Portfolio. Her career continued to progress, and in 1999, she was appointed as the Head of Commercial Banking.
In 2005, she was entrusted with the role of Country Risk Manager while simultaneously serving as the Regional Risk Manager for the West African Monetary Zone, which is now recognized as the AWA Region.
Her extensive credit experience and demonstrated sound credit judgment led to her appointment as Senior Credit Officer by Ecobank Transnational Inc. In this capacity, she held the responsibility of approving significant credit exposures and high-risk exposures specifically for the AWA Region.
In May 2019, Joana Mensah assumed the role of Country Chief Risk Officer at Ecobank Ghana, where she took charge of overseeing Enterprise-Wide Risk functions throughout the bank. This encompassed direct supervision of credit risk, market risk, operational risk, as well as ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) matters. She collaborated with the Management Risk Committee to address various other risk-related areas.
Her professional background boasts significant expertise in SME development, corporate banking, strategic planning, and risk management.
Joana Mensah possesses an MBA in Finance and a BSc. in Agricultural Economics from the University of Ghana, Legon. Additionally, she currently serves as a member of the Board of Directors for Ecobank Gambia and has previously held positions on the Boards of Ecobank Sierra Leone and the Ecobank Ghana Venture Fund.
