Ghana Telecom Sector Boosts National Revenue with GHS 9.83 Billion

The Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications has announced a significant contribution of GHS 9.83 billion to the national revenue from telecommunications companies in 2023. This figure, detailed in the Transparency Initiative Report, represents a 50% increase from the GHS 6.5 billion paid in 2022. The report was jointly released by the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications and the Electronic Money Issuers Chamber of Ghana.

In addition to the financial contributions, the telecommunications sector generated 2,464 direct jobs in 2023, compared to 2,600 jobs in 2022. The launch event in Accra featured CEO of the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications, Ing. Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey, who emphasized the industry’s ongoing commitment to economic growth despite challenges. He highlighted the sector’s role as a cornerstone of Ghana’s economic development, noting that the total contributions of GHS 9.8 billion accounted for about 7.4% of government revenue in 2023.

He further  addressed efforts to ensure data affordability, positioning Ghana just behind Mauritius in data cost efficiency on the continent. The annual report, incorporating data from member companies such as AT, MTN, Vodafone, ATC, Helios, Comsys, CSquared, Ericsson, and Huawei, underscores the industry’s societal and economic contributions.
