I&M Bank announces Abdi Mohamed as new Chief Executive Officer
I&M Bank Ltd has appointed Abdi Mohamed as its new Chief Executive Officer, following regulatory approval by the Central Bank of Kenya.
Announcing the appointment on its official LinkedIn page, the bank said it was delighted to welcome Mohamed at a moment of strong momentum. He joins as I&M builds on the iMara 3.0 journey and looks ahead to its next phase of growth.
His leadership, the bank said, will focus on accelerating growth, putting people and customers first, and strengthening the bank’s Pamoja culture, while delivering sustainable value to shareholders, communities and the wider economy.
“Welcome to I&M Bank, Abdi. We look forward to this next chapter, together,” the bank said.
Mohamed brings more than three decades of experience in financial services across Kenya and other African markets. He joins I&M from Absa Bank Kenya, where he served as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer. Before that, he led Absa Bank Tanzania Limited, and earlier Barclays Bank Tanzania, as Managing Director.
In Tanzania, he worked with a high-performing team on a multi-year transformation aimed at making the bank a more inspiring and vibrant organisation, delivering faster-than-market growth and superior shareholder returns.
He also oversaw a corporate rebranding that completed the separation from Barclays Plc and the transition to Absa Bank. During that period the franchise drew a substantial capital injection from its group, widely reported as a show of commitment to the bank’s growth in the country, and extended scholarships to students at the University of Dar es Salaam.

His earlier career at Barclays spanned operating, consumer, Islamic and retail banking. As Chief Operating Officer of Barclays Bank Kenya, he provided strategic leadership to service-delivery and support teams, with a mandate to meet market commitments efficiently, cost-effectively and under firm control, while delivering a stronger customer experience.
As Consumer Banking Director, and briefly as Regional Head of Islamic Banking for East and West Africa, he designed and executed the bank’s competitive entry into the Islamic banking segment. As Retail Director of Barclays Bank Zambia, he developed and executed an expansion strategy that grew the retail bank and led to market leadership in Zambia.
I&M Bank framed the appointment as the opening of a new chapter: a seasoned pan-African banking leader taking the helm as the institution presses on from iMara 3.0 toward its next stage of growth.
