This week, Mr. Thapelo Tsheole, a seasoned Financial Markets expert has emerged as InstinctBusiness Magazine’s “CEO OF THE WEEK” for the Month of October 16th-22nd,2022 ratings.

Tsheole has about 17 years extensive experience in the capital markets and financial services industry. He joined the BSE in February 2007 as Product Development Manager and was subsequently appointed Deputy Chief Executive Officer in February 2014.

Mr. Thapelo Tsheole’s Educational Background

Mr. Tsheole holds a Bachelor of Social Sciences (Single Major Economics) from the University of Botswana and a Master of Commerce (MComm) in Financial Markets from Rhodes University (RSA). Further, he holds a Masters Degree in Business Administration (MBA) from the Graduate School of Business, University of Cape Town (RSA). He has also completed several financial markets programmes as well as a Leadership Development Programme at the University of Stellenbosch Business School (RSA).

Tsheole has also completed several financial markets programmes which include Registered Person Examination (RPE) conducted by South African Institute of Financial Markets (SAIFM) and SAFEX, and the Enforcement and Market Oversight programme by the United States of America’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), inter alia. He is a Member of the Institute of South African Financial Markets.

Mr. Thapelo Tsheole’s Career

Mr Tsheole was appointed CEO of the Botswana Stock Exchange (BSE) in January 2016 following a short stint as Deputy CEO at BSE since February 2014. His career at BSE began in February 2007 when he was appointed Product Development Manager

He currently sits on the following Boards; Botswana Accountancy Oversight Authority, Medicines Regulatory Authority of Botswana, ACHAP Botswana and ACHAP International.

Tsheole joined the BSE in February 2007 as Product Development Manager and was subsequently appointed Deputy Chief Executive Officer in February 2014. He has since then, contributed immensely to the development of the BSE and African stock markets, especially in the development and structuring of financial instruments, bond market development, capital markets development and policy.

His position as CEO, requires him to be responsible for overall stewardship, strategic direction and performance of the Botswana Stock Exchange in accordance with Botswana Stock Exchange Act.

Mr Tsheole is a firm believer in the development of the financial market in Botswana and Africa, as well as their importance to economic growth and stability and has led initiatives to increase activity in the financial market in Botswana.

Some of the notable achievements during his tenure include the launch of the SADC Green Bond Programme designed to accelerate the take-up of Green Bonds as a tool for SADC member countries to tap into domestic and international investors to finance green projects and assets. Additionally, CoSSE, under Mr. Tsheole’s leadership, has a significant role to play in the projects that aim to foster regional financial integration and macroeconomic convergence in SADC.

In recognition of his exceptional and devoted service to Botswana,he was awarded the Presidential Order of Meritorious Service by His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Botswana in September 2018.

Boards Where He Has Served and Currently Serving

Mr Tsheole is the Chairman of the Committee of SADC Stock Exchanges (CoSSE), and an Executive Committee member of theAfrican Securities Exchanges Association (ASEA). He also sits on the following Boards; Botswana Accountancy Oversight Authority, Medicines Regulatory Authority of Botswana, and Special Economic Zones Authority (SEZA) where he is the Chairman. As a result of his extensive experience he serves as a member of Africa Integrated Reporting Committee (AIRC), a joint initiative between Pan African Federation of Accountants (PAFA) and World Bank since July, 2017.
