MTN Ghana posts record 2025 growth and $984m tax contribution

MTN Ghana delivered an exceptional performance in 2025, posting substantial growth in profitability, subscriber numbers, and digital services while contributing a record $984 million (GHS10.5 billion) in direct and indirect taxes to the national treasury.

The telecom giant also remitted $121.9 million (GHS1.3 billion) in fees and levies to various government agencies, underscoring its pivotal role as a key corporate contributor amid Ghana’s ongoing macroeconomic recovery.

In its full-year financial results for the period ended December 31, 2025, Scancom PLC (MTN Ghana) reported profit after tax soaring 55.9% to $731 million (GHS7.8 billion). Service revenue climbed 36.2% year-on-year to $2.29 billion (GHS24.4 billion), while EBITDA rose 43.5% to $1.38 billion (GHS14.7 billion), pushing margins to an impressive 60.1% through enhanced efficiency and cost discipline.

Data revenue surged nearly 49%, Mobile Money (MoMo) income jumped 35.7% to $562.5 million (GHS6 billion), and digital revenue more than doubled, highlighting the company’s successful shift toward fintech and digital ecosystems.

MTN Ghana invested $599.7 million (GHS6.4 billion) in capital expenditure, primarily for 4G network expansion and upgrades. This drove subscriber growth: total mobile subscribers increased 9.2% to 31.2 million, active data users rose 13.7% to 19.9 million, and active MoMo users grew 12.3% to 19.3 million.

CEO Stephen Blewett credited the strong results to sustained investments and customer-focused strategies. “Our strategy is centred on investing for growth, expanding network coverage and enhancing service quality while supporting Ghana’s digital and financial inclusion agenda,” he said. “The strong results reflect resilient demand for data and mobile financial services, supported by improving macroeconomic conditions.”

Beyond financials, MTN Ghana ramped up community initiatives in 2025, including digital literacy programs, youth entrepreneurship support, health campaigns, and rural connectivity efforts to narrow the digital divide.

At the group level, MTN Group CEO Ralph Mupita hailed Ghana’s performance as a landmark achievement, elevating MTN Ghana to the status of the group’s third major subsidiary—alongside South Africa and Nigeria—based on its exceptional execution and future potential.

“This year we are adding Ghana as the third major subsidiary for the whole group, purely as a function of the way it has performed and the potential that we see going forward,” Mupita stated. He also noted that MTN Ghana topped the group’s internal Million Dollar Challenge in 2025, rewarding excellence in strategy, innovation, and value creation.

The results cement MTN Ghana’s position as one of the MTN Group’s most strategic and high-performing markets, contributing significantly to national development while positioning the company for continued expansion in connectivity and fintech.
