MTN Group Fincommerce and Mastercard Launch Market by MoMo in Uganda

MTN Group Fincommerce, a subsidiary of MTN Fintech Group, in collaboration with MTN MoMo Uganda and Mastercard, has officially launched its new e-commerce platform, Market by MoMo. This platform is set to revolutionize the online shopping experience for Ugandan traders and buyers, offering a seamless and efficient way to buy and sell a wide array of products.

Market by MoMo stands out as a comprehensive digital marketplace that enables Ugandans to purchase and sell genuine products ranging from electronics, groceries, fashion, beauty, fitness, home and office supplies, mobile phones and tablets, computing devices, appliances, and more. The platform promises reliable services, flexible payment options, and prompt deliveries, marking a significant advancement in the country’s e-commerce sector.

With over 3,500 local businesses already on board, Market by MoMo is poised to boost trade and create employment opportunities for many Ugandans. The platform has successfully delivered thousands of orders, demonstrating its potential to provide a convenient and affordable alternative for the Ugandan market. Accessible through the MTN MoMo app and online at market.momo.africa, Market by MoMo offers a streamlined and secure e-commerce experience for both customers and merchants.

The eCommerce Country Lead of MTN Group Fincommerce, Brian Mutungi, highlighted the transformative potential of Market by MoMo during the official launch at Mestil Hotel in Kampala. He emphasized the platform’s role in connecting Ugandan traders with a broad customer base and enhancing consumer convenience. Mutungi also noted the significant contribution of the partnership with Mastercard in bringing Market by MoMo to life.

Mutungi explained that Market by MoMo would allow Ugandan traders to expand their reach and grow their businesses by exposing their products to millions of potential customers. Consumers, in turn, will benefit from a variety of products and a seamless shopping experience, including easy access and transparent pricing.

The user-friendly shopping experience provided by Market by MoMo includes seamless access via the MoMo app and website. Customers from any telecom provider can sign up and start shopping conveniently. The platform supports flexible payment options, including MTN MoMo and major credit/debit cards. Additionally, the platform is zero-rated for MTN customers, meaning they can access it without data charges. Delivery is swift and reliable, with orders reaching customers in Kampala and Greater Kampala within two days or less.

MTN Uganda GM Sales and Distribution, Joseph Bogera, speaking on behalf of MTN Uganda CEO Sylvia Mulinge, described the launch of Market by MoMo as a step towards building a more equitable, connected, and empowered society. Bogera highlighted MTN’s vision of ensuring everyone benefits from a modern, connected life and emphasized the importance of innovation and collaboration in achieving this vision.

MTN MoMo Chief Finance Officer, Sarah Bateta Okwi, speaking on behalf of Chief Executive of MTN MoMo, Richard Yego, further highlighted the enhanced MoMo consumer value proposition through Market by MoMo. This platform extends beyond person-to-person transfers, payments, savings, and loans, bringing convenience to Ugandan shoppers and expanding market opportunities for traders.

Executive Vice President, Market Development, EEMEA at Mastercard, Amnah Ajmal, emphasized the importance of safe, secure, and seamless shopping experiences for consumers. She noted that the collaboration with MTN Group Fintech is a significant step forward in creating economic opportunities and digital inclusion in Uganda, aligning with Mastercard’s vision for a more inclusive, digital Africa.

Market by MoMo offers customers hot deals on its landing page, a wide variety of high-quality items across over 100 categories, and frequent promotions such as flash sales, themed campaigns, and category-specific discounts. The platform also provides opportunities for Ugandans in the diaspora to shop for relatives back home using MoMo or credit/debit card payment options.

The platform supports Ugandan merchants by offering no account management fees and a favorable commission structure. Merchants benefit from free pickup, free packaging, content support, 24-hour order settlements, and exposure to MTN’s extensive customer base through integrated marketing support. A dedicated merchant hub enables merchants to manage their stores and track performance, with a 24/7 support team available to address their needs.

The official launch of Market by MoMo kicks off with unbeatable offers and discounts starting with the upcoming Black Friday and festive season offers in December, where customers can enjoy discounts of up to 60% on select product categories.

“The e-commerce sector is a rapidly growing segment of the global economy,” noted Mutungi. “By launching Market by MoMo in Uganda, we are not only diversifying our product offerings but also empowering Ugandans to join the digital transformation journey, contributing to our nation’s economic growth. Together, we are setting the foundation for a more connected, more digital, and more inclusive Uganda,” concluded Mutungi.

The launch of Market by MoMo underscores MTN Group Fintech’s commitment to driving digital innovation, fostering entrepreneurship, and creating a trusted, secure, and customer-focused experience for Ugandans.
