Sidney Wafula to assume role of BAT Kenya Managing Director in June
British American Tobacco (BAT) Kenya has unveiled a key executive shake-up as part of its succession strategy, naming Sidney Wafula as the new Managing Director effective June 16, 2026.
Wafula will take over from outgoing Managing Director Crispin Achola, who is set to depart on June 15, 2026, after more than five years at the helm to explore opportunities beyond the BAT Group. Achola, who assumed the role in January 2021, navigated the company through turbulent market conditions and regulatory shifts, bolstering its operational strength, commercial performance, and competitive edge.
Reflecting on his leadership, Achola stated, “It has been an honour to lead BAT Kenya and to work alongside a talented and dedicated team to deliver historical results. I am proud of what we have achieved together — strengthening our fundamentals, delivering shareholder value, and positioning the business for continued success.”
Wafula, currently serving as Finance Director for BAT Sub-Saharan Africa, joins with nearly two decades of experience within the group. He began his career at BAT Kenya in 2006 as Head of Audit and has since held senior positions in West Africa, Egypt, Southern Africa, and East and Central Africa, honing skills in strategic planning, financial oversight, and cross-market team management.
In related changes, Catherine Chepkong’a has been appointed as the new Finance Director, effective April 1, 2026. She succeeds Philemon Kipkemoi, who will retire on March 31, 2026, following a 19-year tenure marked by robust financial results, sustained shareholder growth, and enhanced governance.

Kipkemoi commented on his departure: “It has been a privilege to serve this great organization, and I am proud that together we have consistently delivered shareholder value. I leave behind an empowered organisation, ready to drive for greater success.”
Chepkong’a, a BAT veteran since 2012, brings extensive regional finance expertise from roles in East Africa, Uganda, the Horn of Africa, and the Indian Ocean Islands. She also serves as a Trustee of the BAT Kenya Staff Provident Fund.
BAT Kenya Board Chair Rita Kavashe praised the transitions, saying, “The board thanks both Crispin and Philemon for their leadership, professionalism, and substantial contribution to the Company’s growth and transformation agenda. These changes represent the Company’s long-term succession planning and reflect a strong talent pipeline within the organisation.”
Kavashe added, “We are delighted to welcome Sidney and Catherine to the leadership of the company and look forward to close collaboration in our pursuit of delivering transformation in our business that is anchored on our vision of delivering A Better Tomorrow.”
