Standard Bank Namibia appoints new executive for Insurance and Assets

Standard Bank Namibia has appointed Karen van der Merwe as Executive Officer: Insurance and Asset Management.

A seasoned financial services leader with more than three decades of industry experience, van der Merwe brings a proven track record of driving growth, leading high-performing teams, and delivering strong client outcomes.

She has spent over 20 years within the Standard Bank Group, gaining extensive expertise across retail, business, corporate, and private banking. Before this appointment, she served as Head of Personal and Private Banking at Standard Bank Namibia.

In her new role, van der Merwe will lead the Insurance and Asset Management portfolio, focusing on growth, innovation, and operational excellence while supporting the development of employees, partners, and clients. The appointment underscores Standard Bank Namibia’s commitment to developing internal talent and strengthening its leadership capacity to create long-term value for customers and stakeholders.

The bank views the future of insurance as centred on making protection more accessible, relevant, and seamlessly integrated into customers’ everyday financial lives. Under van der Merwe’s leadership, the business will continue to develop solutions that help clients build, grow, and protect their finances, while advancing financial inclusion and economic participation across Namibia.

Commenting on her appointment, van der Merwe said:

Van der Merwe holds a BA (Hons) in Business Management from Lincoln University in the United Kingdom and has completed executive leadership programmes at Stellenbosch Business School, GIBS, and the University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business.

She has received multiple awards for service excellence, including Silver Club status for outstanding client service ratings and recognition as one of the top Client Co-ordinators across Africa within Standard Bank’s Corporate and Investment Banking division. She has also served as a trustee of the Standard Bank Namibia Retirement Fund and contributed to various governance and leadership initiatives throughout her career.
