Standard Bank unites Namibia corporates for affordable housing tournament

Standard Bank Namibia’s Corporate and Investment Banking division has successfully hosted the third annual Padel for Purpose fundraising tournament, uniting the country’s corporate community behind efforts to expand access to affordable housing.

The event, held over two days, expanded from a single-day padel tournament into a sporting festival that also featured soccer. Participants from corporates, industry partners and individuals competed in support of the Bank’s flagship Corporate Social Investment programme, Buy-a-Brick.

Profits from this year’s tournament came in just shy of N$200,000. The funds will support the Buy-a-Brick initiative, which is implemented in partnership with the Shack Dwellers Federation of Namibia and the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development. Since its launch, the programme has raised more than N$27 million and contributed to the construction of over 740 homes for low-income families across Namibia.

Nelson Lucas, Executive for Corporate and Investment Banking at Standard Bank Namibia, said the tournament goes beyond sport. “Padel for Purpose is about bringing people together to create meaningful change in the communities we serve. Every contribution made through this event helps move another family from a shack into a safe and dignified home.

This is what it means to put our purpose into action and demonstrate that Namibia’s growth begins with the wellbeing of its people,” he said.

Old Mutual Namibia served as the main sponsor. Otto Makemba, Personal Finance Managing Director at Old Mutual Namibia, said the partnership reflects a shared commitment to lasting community impact.

“Our support for Padel for Purpose goes beyond sponsorship. It reflects our commitment to working with like-minded partners to strengthen communities and help more Namibian families access safe and dignified housing,” he said.
