Kenya: Telkom Kenya loses 1.6m customers

Telkom Kenya, the third-largest telecom company in the country, has seen a decline of 1.62 million subscribers this year due to a crackdown on improperly registered SIM cards.

Official data analysis reveals that Telkom had 2.25 million active subscribers, marking a 39% decrease from the 4.14 million subscribers in March the previous year.

The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) commenced deactivating SIM cards with irregular registrations in April of the previous year, continuing a periodic process.

While Safaricom and Airtel saw their active SIM card numbers grow by a combined 2.83 million, bringing the total active customer count to 66.43 million from 64.96 million, the crackdown on irregular registrations slowed down new subscriptions.
