Madrid Becomes Black & White Engineering’s New Gateway to Southern Europe

Black & White Engineering has expanded its European operations with the opening of a new office in Madrid, Spain, reinforcing its commitment to supporting the rapidly growing data centre sector across Europe.

The global engineering design consultancy, which specialises in mission-critical buildings and infrastructure, said the expansion strengthens its ability to serve clients locally while supporting increasing demand for data centre engineering expertise throughout the region.

The Madrid office will provide civil, structural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP), and design management services, bringing the company’s multidisciplinary engineering capabilities closer to clients operating in one of Europe’s fastest-growing digital infrastructure markets.

Strategic Expansion into a Growing Market

The new Spanish office will be led by Hector Hernandez, who has been appointed Area Director for Spain, while Marcos Uttley assumes responsibility as RegionalDirector, Europe, overseeing the company’s expansion strategy across Southern Europe.

The move forms part of Black & White Engineering’s broader investment strategy focused on key global data centre markets. The consultancy said it will continue building local engineering capabilities while leveraging its integrated global design model to deliver specialist expertise across civil, structural, MEP and design management disciplines.

Spain has emerged as an increasingly attractive destination for hyperscale and colocation data centre developments, driven by rising cloud adoption, digital transformation initiatives, and growing demand for artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure across Europe.

Leadership to Drive Regional Growth

Marcos Uttley joins the business with extensive international leadership experience spanning engineering, infrastructure services, design consultancy and real estate development.

Throughout his career, he has held Chief Executive Officer, Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer positions across Spain, Portugal, Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States. In his new role, he will focus on strengthening client relationships and driving Black & White Engineering’s continued growth across the European market.

Commenting on the expansion, Uttley described Spain as a strategically important market for data centre investment.

He said the Madrid office provides a strong platform for supporting clients both within Spain and across Europe while reinforcing the company’s long-term commitment to investing in markets with strong growth potential.

He also highlighted Black & White Engineering’s collaborative culture, clear business strategy and technical expertise as key factors that attracted him to the organisation.

Building a Strong Presence in Spain

Hector Hernandez brings more than 20 years of international experience in data centre and critical infrastructure engineering, having delivered projects across Europe, the Middle East, Australia and the Americas.

His experience spans hyperscale and colocation data centres, including advisory services, engineering design, construction, commissioning and operational delivery.

An Accredited Tier Designer certified by the Uptime Institute, Hernandez will work closely with the company’s European leadership team to establish and grow its operations in Spain.

He said the opportunity to build Black & White Engineering’s Spanish business from the ground up was a major attraction, noting that the country’s rapidly evolving data centre market requires specialist engineering expertise combined with deep knowledge of local project delivery.

According to Hernandez, his immediate priorities include developing a highly skilled local engineering team, strengthening client relationships and establishing Black & White Engineering as a trusted partner for mission-critical infrastructure projects in Spain.

Supporting Continued Global Growth

The opening of the Madrid office marks another milestone in Black & White Engineering’s international expansion strategy.

The consultancy now employs more than 1,200 professionals worldwide and delivers engineering design services for data centres and other mission-critical infrastructure projects across major global markets.

The latest expansion reflects the company’s continued investment in high-growth regions as demand for resilient digital infrastructure, cloud computing facilities and next-generation data centres continues to accelerate worldwide.
