NEW: Ecobank, Eco Stove to drive clean cooking in Uganda

Ecobank Uganda has partnered with Eco Stove Ltd to launch a Green Energy Financing Programme aimed at helping schools across Uganda transition from traditional cooking fuels to cleaner and more efficient energy solutions.

The initiative seeks to address the continued reliance of many schools on firewood and charcoal, which increases operating costs, contributes to pressure on forests and exposes kitchen staff to harmful smoke.

Under the partnership, qualifying schools will have access to structured financing from Ecobank Uganda to acquire Eco Stove’s institutional cooking technology without bearing the full upfront cost.

According to the partners, adopting clean-energy cooking solutions could enable schools to achieve more than 60 percent savings on energy costs, potentially freeing up funds for other educational needs.

Speaking at the launch held at the Eco Stove Factory in Bujjuko, Elizabeth Mwerinde Kasedde, Head of Consumer and Commercial Banking at Ecobank Uganda, said the shift to cleaner cooking should be viewed beyond environmental considerations.

“The transition to cleaner cooking should not be viewed only as an environmental ambition; it is also an economic opportunity for schools,” Kasedde said.

The programme is being supported by the Uganda Energy Credit Capitalisation Company (UECCC), bringing together financial, private-sector and energy stakeholders to accelerate the adoption of sustainable cooking technologies.

The partnership is expected to support schools in reducing fuel expenditure while creating healthier kitchen environments for staff and learners.

By combining financing with access to cleaner cooking technology, Ecobank Uganda and Eco Stove aim to make the transition to sustainable energy more practical and affordable for schools and communities across Uganda.
