Ghana: Vodafone announces rebranding to Telecel

Vodafone Ghana has hinted a potential rebranding to become Telecel Ghana.

The revelation of the potential rebranding to Telecel Ghana was made through a social media post. This development follows the National Communication Authority’s approval of Telecel’s takeover of Vodafone Ghana a year ago.

The Director-General (DG) of NCA, Joe Anokye, in 2023 said Telecel had assumed a majority shareholder status, adding that the Government of Ghana (GoG) through the State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA) was also a minority shareholder with 30%.

Telecel Ghana has been operating under the Vodafone brand name for about a year or more.

The anticipated rebranding of Vodafone to Telecel coincides with MTN Ghana, the industry market leader, being designated as a Significant Market Power (SMP). This move is part of measures aimed at fostering a more equitable and efficient playing field for all industry participants.

In the last two years, the declaration of MTN Ghana as an SMP has resulted in an asymmetric savings of GH¢86.6 million for the smaller Mobile Network Operators (MNOs).

The Significant Market Power (SMP) designation was implemented to ensure a fair playing field, curbing the company’s capacity to control profit margins, manipulate tariffs, and potentially create obstacles for new entrants or smaller players in the market, among other objectives.

Vodafone Ghana holds approximately 18% of the mobile telephony market share. The introduction of Telecel is anticipated to contribute to an expansion of market share for the business.
