Kenya Power showcases decade of transformation at Global Energy Forum

Kenya Power Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Dr. (Eng.) Joseph Siror has highlighted the utility’s significant progress in expanding electricity access and modernising the national grid during a high-level Leadership Forum on Energy for Prosperity held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Speaking at the forum , Dr. Siror outlined how Kenya has dramatically scaled its power infrastructure over the past decade. Electricity connections have risen from 2.7 million to 10.4 million, while the national power network has expanded from 50,000 kilometres to more than 340,000 kilometres. These gains, he noted, form a strong foundation for converting expanded access into broader economic opportunity.

The Leadership Forum brought together global decision-makers including Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Støre, Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum Hon. James Opiyo Wandayi, World Bank Group President Ajay Banga, Qatar Fund for Development Director-General H.E. Fahad Al-Sulaiti, and Global Energy Alliance CEO Woochong Um.

Discussions centred on advancing Mission 300, under which more than 60 million people have been newly connected to electricity, 36 National Energy Compacts have been launched, and tens of billions of dollars have been committed by development partners.

While celebrating these milestones, leaders stressed the need to move beyond connection numbers toward lasting prosperity. Agriculture, Africa’s largest employer, featured prominently as a priority sector. Participants emphasised that combining reliable electricity with irrigation, cold storage, agro-processing, finance and market access can rapidly raise rural incomes and stimulate investment.

Dr. Siror positioned Kenya Power at the forefront of this next phase. He described how the utility is deploying digital technologies to improve service delivery, including the installation of fibre-optic cables along power lines under the Digital Superhighway initiative and the nationwide rollout of smart meters.

These innovations, he said, enhance operational efficiency, reduce losses and strengthen customer experience.
He further underscored Kenya’s substantial geothermal and broader generation potential as attractive opportunities for private and institutional investment, inviting partners to support the continued expansion of clean, reliable power that can drive industrialisation and job creation.

Through its participation, Kenya Power reaffirmed its central role in translating national energy access gains into tangible economic transformation, aligning the utility’s strategy with the broader continental ambition of using electricity as a catalyst for prosperity.
