Lai Labode: Building Africa’s first cash reward ecosystem

Dr. Lai Labode is a distinctive combination of business strategist, cultural innovator, and deep thinker, whose work effortlessly connects innovation, identity, and transformative impact.

He defines himself as a “Modern Sage” and a “21st Century Philosopher.” He approaches business with a thoughtful, human-first lens, especially within mobile finance and digital ecosystems.

With deep expertise in business logic and a strong command of mobile technology, Dr. Labode has built a reputation for designing systems that do more than function; they influence behavior, loyalty, and long-term value creation. His work consistently explores how technology can unlock emotional connections between businesses and consumers, a concept he has refined into what he describes as “Beneficiary Emotional Equity (BEE).”

In 2017, Labode founded CashToken Rewards Africa, where he serves as MD/CEO. Under his leadership, the company pioneered Africa’s first Cash Reward-as-a-Service (CRaaS) model—a performance-based system engineered to optimize customer loyalty investments across industries.

Its flagship innovation, the CashToken, is an electronic reward and celebratory commodity that transforms everyday transactions into opportunities for life-changing cash rewards, while also promoting financial inclusion through savings, insurance, and pension pathways. Since its African launch in Nigeria in April 2018, the platform has engaged major clients, including MTN, Airtel, Globacom, 9Mobile, SPAR, and Konga, signaling its broad relevance and growth potential.

Beyond CashToken, his entrepreneurial footprint is both expansive and progressive. As Founder of MyBankUSSD Limited, he is building what he describes as Africa’s global digital bank, a step toward redefining access to financial services on the continent. Through NaijaBillionaire Limited, he introduced Nigeria’s first national e-raffle platform, aiming to set new standards in transparency, responsible gaming, and large-scale reward systems.

His earlier venture, Salt & Einstein Limited, reflects his long-standing commitment to integration within the financial ecosystem. The company’s technology integrates multiple financial services into a unified access point, enabling providers to offer seamless, streamlined solutions to their customers.

Dr. Labode’s career also includes leadership roles in companies focused on micro-credit access, insurance innovation, and mobile financial services; he does not enter industries to compete, he enters them to transform./

Yet his influence extends far beyond the boardroom. Deeply rooted in his Egba heritage, Dr. Labode has emerged as a cultural force, championing initiatives that merge tradition with modern expression. His involvement in projects like Egbaliganza reflects a broader vision to reposition African culture, particularly Egba identity, as both a source of pride and a catalyst for economic empowerment. His approach goes beyond celebration; it is about systematizing culture into a sustainable, globally relevant system.

His appointment as Aare Agba of Egbaland marks a significant moment not only as the youngest to hold the title, but as a symbol of evolving leadership that prioritizes youth engagement, creativity, and cross-sector collaboration. Through this role, he continues to advocate for initiatives that bridge culture, finance, and technology, fostering a new generation of Africans who are both economically empowered and culturally grounded.

In essence, Dr. Lai Labode is not just building companies; he is constructing ideas, systems, and narratives that challenge conventional thinking. Whether through financial innovation or cultural resurgence, his work creates enduring structures that inspire participation, reward engagement, and redefine Africa’s place in the global story.
