Telecel Ghana Foundation Supports Healthcare With Flagship Initiatives
Telecel Ghana Foundation in celebration of Ashanti Month, has launched two flagship health initiatives, Healthfest and Homecoming, to bolster healthcare and well-being for residents and communities in the region.
As a testament to its commitment to community health, Telecel Ghana organised Healthfest, a free medical screening event that offered a range of health checks, including blood pressure, blood sugar, malaria, hepatitis B, HIV, typhoid, weight, and general health consultations. Held in the bustling streets of K.O. Freeman in Ashtown, the event saw 483 individuals receiving crucial health screenings and advice. Additionally, the Foundation facilitated the registration, replacement, and renewal of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) for 300 residents.
One beneficiary, 53-year-old Naomi Antwi Agyei, a petty trader and mother of three, expressed her gratitude. “I am always skeptical about health outreach programmes, but attending today’s medical screening by Telecel Ghana Foundation has been very helpful. I never knew I had health conditions, but now that I’m aware, I can take steps to manage them,” she said.
Healthfest was designed to not only provide immediate health checks but also encourage healthier lifestyles and prompt individuals to seek necessary treatments.
Simultaneously, eleven kilometers away in Atonsu, the Foundation organised Homecoming, an initiative aimed at settling outstanding medical debts of recovering patients at the Kumasi South Hospital. The Foundation covered the medical bills for 15 patients with conditions ranging from skin burns and auto accidents to surgeries and chest infections, allowing them to reunite with their families.
The Foundation also donated essential medical supplies, including gloves, fetoscopes, bedsheets, and toiletries to the hospital’s mother and baby unit, aiding maternal health officers in their care for expectant and nursing mothers. Administrator for Kumasi South Government Hospital, Dr. Gyamfi Yeboah, noted, “The clearing of treatment costs and donation of medical supplies will make a huge difference. This gesture has empowered the hospital to work and save lives as well as deliver quality healthcare.”
The Connected Health initiatives of Telecel Ghana Foundation during Ashanti Month exemplify the power of community-driven healthcare. Homecoming provided direct relief to individuals burdened by medical expenses, while Healthfest ensured broader access to essential health screenings and education.
Head of Foundation, Sustainability and External Communications at Telecel Ghana, Rita Agyeiwaa Rockson, stated, “We believe that everyone deserves access to quality healthcare, regardless of their financial situation or socioeconomic background. With our Connected Health Initiatives, we are contributing to prime healthcare delivery and community health support for people and communities in Kumasi and other parts of the Ashanti Region.”
Among the beneficiaries was two-year-old Richmond, who suffered severe burns from a kitchen accident. His father, Kurt Asubonteng, expressed his gratitude, saying, “This gesture from Telecel Foundation is a miracle for us. Although Richmond was ready to be discharged, we struggled to raise funds to clear his treatment bills. With Telecel Foundation coming to our aid, we can now go home as he heals from the burns.”
