Kenya’s Crude oil capacity insufficient for refinery

A senior petroleum ministry official has disclosed that deposits of crude oil in Kenya are insufficient to start building refinery.

The country presently exports no crude. In 2012 Kenya discovered commercial oil reserves in its Lokichar basin. Tullow Oil Company assess the basin to have about 560 million barrels in the so- called 2c proven oil reserves

Tullow explained that they will increased from 60, 000 to 100 barrels per day of cross production

Oil refinery when built will produced over 400, 000 barrels a day and these barrels bring huge sum of money to countries exporting oil. The principal secretary at the Petroleum and Mining Ministry has said.

He stated that: “And we have 80,000 barrels a day, so where are we going to make money on that? We can import cheaper from India”.

Some giant companies in Africa which has discovered crude oil include Africa Oil Corporation and Total.

Currently, Tullow explained that they are expecting commercial frame work agreements from the government and also measures over acquisition of land, to construct 800-km pipeline and oil field infrastructure by the first quarter of the year.
