Indonesia to import rice from Vietnam, Thailand

Indonesia’s upcoming acquisition of 1.5 million tonnes of rice will predominantly come from Vietnam and Thailand as the main rice suppliers.

Following Indonesian President Joko Widodo’s announcement regarding the need for an additional 1.5 million tonnes of rice for the national reserves until the year’s end, Indonesia’s Acting Agriculture Minister Arief Prasetyo Adi affirmed this to the local press. This requirement comes in addition to the two million tonnes of rice reserves imported since the beginning of the year.

The import of 1.5 million tonnes of rice has received all the required licenses from Indonesian authorities, and the import process is scheduled to commence at the end of this month.

Indonesia’s decision to select Vietnam as its primary rice supplier reinforces the strong reputation for the quality of Vietnamese rice.

Vietnam’s rice supply has consistently maintained its strong reputation, earning the trust of both the Indonesian government and consumers. This trust is particularly vital as Indonesia grapples with a shortage in locally produced food due to the effects of the El Niño weather phenomenon.
