Zambia bans maize exports over dry spell

The Zambian government has implemented limitations on the export of maize and mealie meal (maize flour) in response to an extended dry period that poses risks to the upcoming harvest.

Minister of Agriculture Reuben Phiri said the restriction will only be lifted after a careful assessment of the next harvest.

“Owing to the prevailing situation, the government will continue to put the interest of the country above everything else. In this regard, it has restricted the export of maize grain and mealie meal,” the minister said.

He presented a ministerial statement in Parliament concerning the nation’s food security status in light of the prolonged dry.

He stated that the government has deployed military personnel to monitor all identified smuggling routes, with increased security patrols and roadblocks being implemented in districts susceptible to illegal trafficking.
