Ghana Unveils 5G Network, Driving Next-Level Digital Innovation

The Minister for Communications and Digitalisation (MoCD), Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful (MP), has officially launched Ghana’s 5G network, marking a pivotal moment in the country’s digital development.

Speaking at the launch event on November 1, 2024, in Accra, she emphasized that this milestone reflects Ghana’s significant technological journey and dedication to progress.

Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful outlined Ghana’s evolution from basic 1G voice communication in the 1990s to the ground-breaking potential of 5G. Each technological leap, from 2G’s introduction of SMS to 4G’s high-speed data capabilities, has laid the foundation for 5G’s transformative power.

According to her the initial 5G rollout will start in major cities including Accra, Kumasi, and Takoradi, with nationwide coverage planned by 2026.

Emphasizing inclusivity, the Minister highlighted strategies for rural connectivity through the Universal Service Fund managed by GIFEC, aimed at ensuring equitable access.

On cybersecurity, she assured the public that stringent data protection measures aligned with international standards are in place to safeguard user information.

She also highlighted the importance of education in this digital era, announcing the establishment of a Digital Youth Hub at the University of Ghana to foster 5G-driven innovation, with plans for expansion to other campuses.

The Minister thanked President Nana Akufo-Addo for his vision and leadership in Ghana’s digitalisation agenda.

The launch of 5G is expected to spur economic growth, drive innovation, and enhance the quality of life across Ghana, solidifying the nation’s position as a leader in digital transformation in the region.
