Kenya: Safaricom rewards 5 customers with Ksh. 1 million each in the ongoing ‘Shine Kenya’ campaign

Safaricom has rewarded five additional winners with Ksh. 1 million each in the ongoing nationwide Shine Kenya Shinda Mamilii Kama Bingwa campaign.

The award ceremony was held in Mtwapa, Kilifi County, where five new winners were unveiled. The latest recipients include Samuel Kuria from Nairobi, Emmanuel Mbogo from Murang’a, Kevin Bitienyi from Kakamega, Geoffrey Langat from Mulot, and Tabu Ndonya from Mariakani, Mombasa County.

During the event, Tabu Ndonga, a 45-year-old mother of four from Mariakani, expressed her delight after receiving her Ksh. 1 million cheque. She shared that the funds will greatly assist her in providing for her family, as she has struggled to meet her children’s basic needs due to her limited income as a house manager. Tabu also plans to donate Ksh. 250,000 to support her local dispensary.

Emmanuel Mbogo, an 18-year-old from Murang’a, was thrilled to be named one of the weekly winners in the ongoing campaign. After completing form four last year, his dreams of furthering his education were put on hold due to financial constraints. Now, with this windfall, Mbogo plans to return to school and pursue a course in plumbing, which will enable him to secure a job and support his family.

Similar aspirations were shared by Samuel Kuria, a part-time lecturer at a private university, who also emphasized the importance of education. Samuel expressed gratitude to Safaricom, saying, “In these tough economic times, many are struggling to make ends meet. This initiative by Safaricom is a lifeline for many Kenyans. With this money, I can now fulfill my dream of pursuing a PhD and expand my poultry project, which I run with my mother.”

Kevin Bitienyi, a 33-year-old casual worker from Shimanyiro, Kakamega County, couldn’t contain his excitement upon receiving his cheque. “I’ve been working as a casual labourer, but today marks the beginning of a new chapter. I plan to invest in agriculture, which will help me become self-employed and support my family. My life is about to change drastically,” said Mr. Bitienyi.

To participate in the campaign, customers need to conduct transactions on M-PESA or purchase Safaricom Bundles. For every Ksh. 200 transacted on M-PESA or any Bundles purchase of Ksh. 20 and above, customers earn an entry into the weekly draw. Qualifying M-PESA transactions include Send Money (P2P), Lipa na M-PESA, and any transactions made through the M-PESA app, My Safaricom app, or by dialing *444#, *544#, or *334#.
