Volkswagen Group records 10-year low sales in 2021

Volkswagen Group has recorded its lowest sales figures in 10 years in 2021. The auto company said it made 8.9 million deliveries in 2021 thereby witnessing an 8.1% drop in sales as compared to previous years.

Blaming the occurrence on the chip crisis that rocked the auto industry last year, Klaus Zellmer said “the huge effects of chips on production were not able to be fully compensated.” He described as “unusually challenging circumstances”, the conditions under which the company operated in the year under review. The carmaker said further that it expected supply chain conditions to remain volatile in the first half of this year.

Meanwhile, a report earlier stated that Mercedes-Benz sales dropped 5% in 2021, losing its crown to BMW for the first time in five years as the premium carmaker with most vehicles sold worldwide.

BMW saw record deliveries of 2.21 million vehicles from the BMW brand, a success attributed in part to its ability to adapt to supply chain shortages.
