Somali to sign Treaty of Accession with EAC

The Federal Republic of Somalia is on the verge of becoming a member of the East African Community, with imminent plans to sign a Treaty of Accession at State House, Entebbe, Uganda.

Somalia’s President Sheikh Hassan Mohamud is set to sign the Treaty of Accession alongside the Chairperson of the Summit of EAC Heads of State and President of South Sudan, Salva Kiir.

Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni will oversee the signing ceremony.

The event will be attended by the EAC Secretary General Peter Mathuki, along with other distinguished dignitaries.

The Summit of the East African Community (EAC) Heads of State at their 23rd Ordinary Meeting held in Arusha, Tanzania, considered the Report of the EAC Council of Ministers on the Negotiations with the Federal Republic of Somalia into the EAC.

The Summit has made the decision to admit Somalia as a full member of the Community. Additionally, the chairperson of the Summit (President Kiir) has been assigned to coordinate with Somalia for the signing of the Treaty of Accession into the Community.

The Heads of State have instructed the EAC Council of Ministers to formulate a roadmap for the integration of Somalia into the Community. Progress on this integration is expected to be reported at the next meeting of the Summit.

Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Uganda, and Tanzania are the other Partner States within Africa’s fastest-integrating bloc.
