Kenya secures leadership of UN tourism committee

Kenya’s outstanding performance in the tourism sector has led to its election as the chair of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Committee on Tourism and Competitiveness.

The declaration was disclosed at the inaugural meeting of the committee, convened at the organization’s headquarters in Madrid, Spain.

Assuming the chairmanship for a three-year term, Kenya will preside over the position from 2024 to 2027.

Kenya secured the position after two rounds of voting, triumphing over formidable contenders from Thailand and Malta.

The announcement signifies a significant boost for Kenya in its efforts to strengthen its standing as a leader in the global tourism industry, as noted by Tourism Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua.

The bid was grounded in Kenya’s tourism competitiveness pillars, encompassing elements such as destination marketing, diversified tourism offerings, sustainable tourism practices, and the preservation of cultural and natural heritage.

Kenya’s victory was propelled by strengths in training, skills development programs, as well as innovations and technology within the tourism sector.

Moreover, the country’s notable infrastructural development in areas such as roads, airports, and hospitality facilities were underscored as crucial enablers, unlocking significant growth potential for the sector.

Mutua said the win puts Kenya in a position of decision making in matters that affect tourism across the globe.

“This vote demonstrates the confidence that UNWTO member states have in Kenya’s leadership and ability to steer the organization’s agenda on tourism competitiveness,” Mutua said.
