Nigeria: NIS to get aircraft and drones for border monitoring

Acting Controller General of Nigerian Immigration Services (NIS), Caroline Wuraola Adepoju has revealed plans for the border security and migration management agency to procure aircraft, helicopters, and drones for surveillance and aerial monitoring.

Adepoju stated that acquiring this mobile critical infrastructure will significantly aid the NIS in fulfilling its core duty of monitoring and controlling the movement of individuals across the nation’s land, sea, and air borders.

She broke the news at a retreat organized by NIS Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Command Lagos entitled: “One Impression: inter-agency collaboration.”

In addition to acquiring operational equipment, she mentioned that the NIS is actively investing in technology to enhance the production of travel documents and implement other initiatives aimed at strengthening border security in the country.

Adepoju emphasized that this reflects the commitment of Minister of Interior Dr. Olubunmi Tunji Ojo to bolster border security and restore the agency’s aerial capabilities.

“We are going to buy aircraft, we will buy drones, we are going to buy helicopters to ensure that we effectively do aerial border management. Very soon, NIS will be deploying the e-gate to make it seamless for our nationals to come in, make it less stressful. In the early part of 2024 we will deploy the e-gate ensuring that our MIDAS will improve on them, ensuring our borders, air, land and sea are fortified. ”

“The electronic gate, for example our nationals may not need, except they are persons of interest, to be attended to by immigration officers” she said.

Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Kabir Yussif noted that collaboration among agencies at the Lagos Airport continues to yield advantages in the air travel value chain.
