UBA Ghana Celebrates A Decade of Empowering Students

UBA Ghana proudly marks the 10th Anniversary of its National Essay Competition, a flagship initiative dedicated to fostering critical thinking and writing skills among Ghanaian students while promoting educational excellence.

The landmark anniversary event was held at Prempeh College in Kumasi, bringing together students from Yaa Asantewaa Girls, Kumasi Anglican SHS, and Kumasi Wesley Girls’ High School. This location symbolizes the broad reach and profound impact the competition has had over the past decade.

Since its inception, the UBA National Essay Competition has been a beacon of opportunity for senior high school students, offering scholarships of up to $10,000 for tertiary education anywhere in Africa. This initiative aligns with UBA’s mission to nurture the next generation of leaders in Ghana.

Reflecting on this milestone, Head of Retail Banking at UBA Ghana, Peter Dery, said, “This 10th-anniversary edition of the National Essay Competition is a proud moment for UBA Ghana. Our mission has always been to empower young Ghanaians to reach their highest potential. We are honored to celebrate a decade of positively impacting lives and futures through education under the UBA Foundation.”

The sentiment was echoed by Ashanti Regional Director of the Ghana Education Service, Mr. Amankra Appiah, who praised UBA’s efforts: “Quality education requires the collective input of all stakeholders. For the past decade, the UBA National Essay Competition has provided students not only with a platform to showcase their writing skills but also an opportunity to think critically, explore their creativity, and address pressing issues. These skills are invaluable, and we are proud to see Ghanaian students developing into thoughtful, informed citizens through this initiative.”

Headmaster of Prempeh College, Very Rev. Levis Asare, expressed his gratitude to UBA for choosing their school for the anniversary launch. He mentioned that Prempeh College is proud to be the first destination outside the national capital for the event and pledged to work with teachers to ensure maximum participation from his school while encouraging other heads of schools to do the same.

The competition invites all Senior High School students across Ghana to submit handwritten essays by December 10, 2024, on the topic: “Climate Change: Discuss the importance of environmental sustainability and actions young people can take in combating climate change.” Winners will receive scholarships and other rewards to support their educational pursuits in any university in Africa.
