Ghana: Deloitte Assurance collaborate, nine others appointed members of National Sustainability Reporting Implementation Committee

Dr. Kwabena Situ of Deloitte Ghana, along with nine others, has been appointed to the National Sustainability Reporting Implementation Committee.

The committee’s members represent various sectors, including the Bank of Ghana, the National Insurance Commission, the Ghana Stock Exchange, the National Pensions Regulatory Authority, the State Interest and Governance Authority, the Chamber of Mines, the Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industries, and several professional services firms.

The committee’s role is to ensure effective adoption and implementation of Sustainability Standards by businesses in Ghana. It aims to promote the benefits of IFRS S1 and S2 standards, monitor sector-specific progress, and provide feedback to the ICAG Sustainability Adoption Standing Committee.

Following his swearing-in, Andrew Akoto, Chairman of the Committee and Partner at KPMG, stated that the committee will craft and execute a detailed implementation strategy while coordinating efforts among all stakeholders involved.

He assured that the committee will oversee and assess the progress of implementation and, importantly, act as ambassadors for promoting the sustainability reporting standards.

“I’m very happy for this platform to engage with not only accountants because yes the implementation reporting committee is being incubated by the ICAG, but we expect to go beyond the ICAG to involve other broader stakeholder consultations as well as participants for us to be successful with this mandate”, he explained.

“Even as we dialogue at this opportune time, we are minded that currently one of the challenges engaging the national media conversation is about threats of demonstrations for strikes, for civil unrest because of the existential threats of ‘Galamsey’ within our economy; and as we note, there should be economic growth but balanced with environmental stewardship and for that matter, we must be bold to engage with very key persons, especially the politicians because if we are to say it as it is we are where we are because there has not been a very frontal and direct manifesto to deal with this ‘Galamsey’ menace.

The primary objectives of the National Sustainability Reporting Implementation Committee are serving as ambassadors for the implementation of the sustainability reporting standards, ensuring that respective institutions, members or clients adopt and comply with the sustainability reporting standards and providing guidelines and support to the Institute of Chartered Accountant Ghana (ICAG) in the development and implementation of the roadmap for the standards.
